
Deputy CIO, NATO, Belgium
Mr. Mario Beccia is NATO’s Deputy CIO for Cybersecurity, working in the Office of the Chief Information Officer. He holds a degree in Economics and Management, an MBA in Innovation Management, and multiple certifications in cybersecurity and IT (PMP, CISM, CISSP, CCSP, ITIL, TOGAF).
Beccia began his career in 1997 at a start-up focused on web technologies for businesses, later working as an independent IT and Information Assurance consultant in Italy and Belgium. In 2006, he joined NATO’s Allied Command Transformation, contributing to business transformation and capability development. He supported the setup of NATO’s Computer Incident Response Capability (NCIRC) and IT Modernization programs, helped develop cloud and cyber defence roadmaps, and collaborated with various NATO bodies.
He served as technical director for the Cyber Coalition exercise and led the Cyber Defence track of CWIX. He also established the Cyber Defence tracks for ACT’s TIDE Sprint and NATO’s Framework for Collaborative Interaction (FFCI).
In 2015, Beccia joined the NATO Communications & Information Agency, where he supported the development of several cyber defence information exchange initiatives, including the NATO Industry Cyber Partnership (NICP), and led the NCIRC implementation program.
In 2018, he became Chief Information Security Officer and Project Officer for Cyber Defence at the European Defence Agency. There, he built the Agency’s cybersecurity practice, managed classified information systems, and led multinational projects under the PESCO framework. He also launched the milCERTs Interactive Conference in 2020.
In March 2021, Beccia returned to NATO as Head of the Strategic Support Branch, and in February 2022, assumed his current role as Deputy CIO for Cybersecurity, leading NATO’s cyber transformation efforts.
He is passionate about martial arts, computer programming, cryptocurrencies, and electric vehicles.
